The Ultimutt English Bulldog Handbook

Despite their tough exterior, English Bulldogs are incredibly affectionate and easygoing.

Introduction and History

The English Bulldog is easily recognisable, with its distinctive wrinkled face, stocky build, and endearing personality. Originating in England, this breed was initially developed for bull-baiting, a now-outlawed sport that required strength and tenacity. However, after bull-baiting was banned in the 19th Century, Bulldogs were selectively bred to eliminate aggression, transforming them into the affectionate and gentle companions they are today.

Modern English Bulldogs are beloved for their easygoing and friendly nature. They thrive in a family environment and adapt well to apartment living due to their relatively low energy levels. Despite their tough exterior, these dogs are incredibly affectionate and form strong bonds with their owners.

Quirks of a English Bulldog

English Bulldogs are known for their laid-back and low-energy lifestyle. They are happiest when lounging in their favourite indoor spots and enjoy being close to their families. Their affectionate nature makes them excellent companions who thrive on attention and human interaction.

One of the most charming quirks of Bulldogs is their tendency to snore loudly, a result of their brachycephalic (short-nosed) facial structure. Their slow, deliberate movements often give them a relaxed demeanour, though they do have playful bursts of energy. Despite their somewhat gruff appearance, Bulldogs are incredibly loving and seek companionship through physical touch and constant presence around their owners.

Health Conditions English Bulldog can be prone to

Like many purebred dogs, English Bulldogs are susceptible to specific health conditions, primarily due to their unique physical traits. Some of the most common issues include:
  • Breathing Difficulties: As a brachycephalic breed, Bulldogs often struggle with restricted airflow, particularly in hot or humid conditions. Their short noses and elongated soft palates make breathing more difficult, especially during exercise or warm weather.
  • Hip Dysplasia: This condition affects Bulldogs when their hip joints develop improperly, leading to discomfort and mobility issues. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding excessive jumping or strenuous activity can help manage this condition.
  • Skin Infections: Due to their deep facial and body folds, Bulldogs are prone to skin infections caused by trapped moisture and debris. Regular cleaning and drying of their wrinkles help prevent irritation and infections.
  • Obesity: Bulldogs have a natural tendency to overeat, coupled with their low energy levels, making obesity a common concern. Proper portion control and a well-balanced diet are essential for maintaining a healthy weight.

Regular veterinary check-ups and proactive care are crucial to keeping Bulldogs healthy and ensuring their longevity as happy companions.

English Bulldog exercise

English Bulldogs have relatively low exercise requirements compared to more active breeds. A couple of short walks per day, along with some indoor playtime, are sufficient to meet their needs. Because of their short snouts, Bulldogs can struggle with breathing when overexerted, so it’s important to keep exercise sessions brief and avoid extreme heat.

They enjoy playful activities like gentle tug-of-war and interactive toys but are equally content spending time lounging with their families. Bulldogs should always have access to fresh water and a cool resting place, particularly during warm weather.

English Bulldog grooming

Despite their short coats, English Bulldogs require regular grooming to maintain their skin and coat health. Their facial wrinkles and skin folds must be cleaned frequently to prevent infections. A soft, non-irritating washcloth should be used to clean these areas, particularly around the face, neck, and tail.

Bulldogs shed minimally, but weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and keep their coat in good condition. Bathing should be done every few months or as needed to keep their skin clean and healthy. Additionally, regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care are essential to their overall well-being.

English Bulldog diet

English Bulldogs require a well-balanced diet that supports their health while preventing unnecessary weight gain. Due to their low activity levels, they are prone to obesity, making portion control vital. High-quality dog food rich in protein, fibre, and essential nutrients is ideal.
Meal times should be structured, typically split into two meals per day to support digestion and maintain a healthy metabolism. Bulldogs should not be fed human food, as it can lead to digestive issues and unhealthy weight gain. Fresh water should always be available, and treats should be given in moderation.

Why we recommend fresh for a English Bulldog

Highly processed kibble can really exacerbate the conditions English Bulldogs are more susceptible to. A dog fed on a fresh food diet will live on average 32 months longer than a dog fed a dry diet (read more about this on our blog). That’s why a fresh Tuggs diet, gently cooked to lock in the nutrition, pre-portioned and tailor-made is a no-brainer for your pooch.

Promote better digestion for your English Bulldog

English Bulldogs are pretty good at digesting a whole load of things (more so than us humans!) but that’s not to say they can digest anything. The human-grade ingredients we include in Tuggs is highly digestible and helps your English Bulldog thrive in so many ways: providing the protein for growth (particularly muscle growth), a strong heart, and of course, nice and firm poops. With ingredients your English Bulldog can digest, their poop will be less volumous and less stinky. Makes picking them up slightly less tedious!

Improve dental hygiene for your English Bulldog

Dried pellets are definitely not the answer to clean teeth (or fresh breath). In fact, due to its ultra-processed nature, kibble is more prone to getting stuck in your pup’s teeth, contributing to decay and plaque build-up. Unsurprisingly, a fresh-food diet contributes far less to this. Moreover, the fresh ingredients contribute to a stronger overall immune system, ready to fight off any bacterial infections in the mouth or beyond.

Maintain healthy joints for your English Bulldog

English Bulldogs can be prone to issues with their joints. Fortunately, a lean body condition will lessen the chances of issues manifesting - easily achievable on a Tuggs diet. Our salmon oil in each recipe has loads of Omega-3 fatty acids, the first port of call for any doggy looking to improve arthritis and reduce inflammation. Even if kibble did contain some of these healthy fats, the ultra-processed nature of the food makes it harder for your English Bulldog to absorb the goodness. Furthermore, the fats can go off given kibble has such a long shelf life. Fresh food is, well, fresh. The ingredients land on your doorstep with all their goodness ready to nourish your beloved.

Maintain a healthy weight for your English Bulldog

Our algorithm will sort a tailor-made diet for your English Bulldog, with clear portioning, and can be adapted as your pooch grows from a puppy into a lean adult. An overweight English Bulldog will be at a far increased risk of various conditions including arthritis, diabetes, and even cancer. Fresh food with no dodgy ingredients is a pretty easy way to stay on top of the weight issue!
