The Ultimutt Cavapoo Handbook

The adorable and affectionate crossbreed of the Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel make excellent companions.

Introduction and History

The Cavapoo, a hybrid dog, is the result of crossbreeding a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Breeders in the 1990s combined the two breeds to create a dog that not only had hypoallergenic traits but also a friendly and affectionate personality. This combination was immediately popular, as people were drawn to the Cavapoo's cuteness, intelligence and reduced allergy risk. The breed's welcoming nature and small size make it an ideal companion for both individuals and families. People often choose Cavapoos for their loving nature and ease of care, making them excellent pets in homes of all sizes.

Quirks of a Cavapoo

Cavapoos are incredibly social dogs that thrive on constant interaction with their owners and other pets. They are often seen staying close to their family members, eagerly seeking attention and affection. Cavapoos are known for being lap dogs, loving physical closeness with their humans. Although they are friendly towards familiar faces, they tend to be cautious when meeting new people, building trust over time.

Despite their desire for companionship, Cavapoos also enjoy playing interactive games like fetch and tug-of-war. Their intelligence makes training a breeze, and they quickly pick up new tasks and commands. These dogs are happiest when they spend time with people, and they can become anxious if left alone for too long.

Health Conditions Cavapoo can be prone to

Like many mixed-breed dogs, Cavapoos can inherit health issues from both of their parent breeds. Some common health concerns include:
  • Hip Dysplasia: A hereditary condition that affects the hip joint, leading to pain and mobility issues. This can be managed through weight control and appropriate exercise.
  • Ear Infections: Due to their floppy, hanging ears, Cavapoos are prone to ear infections. Regular ear cleaning and keeping the ears dry are essential for prevention.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): This condition causes gradual vision loss as the retina deteriorates. Early eye check-ups can help catch signs before irreversible damage occurs.
  • Dental Problems: As a small breed, Cavapoos are more susceptible to plaque buildup and gum disease. Regular tooth brushing is crucial to avoid dental issues.

Cavapoo exercise

Cavapoos, while energetic, don’t require as much exercise as some other high-energy breeds. They need about 30 to 60 minutes of activity daily, including short walks, playtime, and mental stimulation through games or training. These dogs enjoy interactive activities like agility training, jumping over obstacles, and retrieving items, which helps them stay fit and engaged. Two short walks a day are typically enough to meet their exercise needs, as long as they are supplemented with additional play and interaction.

Cavapoo grooming

One of the main reasons people choose Cavapoos is their hypoallergenic coat, a mix of the Poodle’s curls and the Cavalier’s smoother fur. While they shed less than many other breeds, their coat still requires regular grooming to prevent matting and tangles. Weekly brushing is generally recommended, but some Cavapoos may need more frequent grooming, especially if they inherit the Poodle’s curly coat.

Routine grooming also includes nail trimming, ear cleaning, and teeth brushing. If you're not comfortable grooming your Cavapoo yourself, a professional groomer can assist with tasks like haircuts and more intricate grooming needs.

Cavapoo diet

Due to their small size, Cavapoos have specific dietary requirements. They need a high-quality, protein-rich diet that supports their active lifestyle and overall health. Lean meats, vegetables, and healthy fats are the foundation of a balanced diet for this breed. Since Cavapoos are small, monitoring their weight is essential to prevent overeating and weight gain. They should be fed multiple small meals a day to aid digestion and keep their energy levels consistent.

Cavapoos require food designed for small breeds, which provides the appropriate nutrients for their size and activity level. Always offer fresh water and control treat portions to ensure they remain healthy.

Why we recommend fresh for a Cavapoo

Highly processed kibble can really exacerbate the conditions Cavapoos are more susceptible to. A dog fed on a fresh food diet will live on average 32 months longer than a dog fed a dry diet (read more about this on our blog). That’s why a fresh Tuggs diet, gently cooked to lock in the nutrition, pre-portioned and tailor-made is a no-brainer for your pooch.

Promote better digestion for your Cavapoo

Cavapoos are pretty good at digesting a whole load of things (more so than us humans!) but that’s not to say they can digest anything. The human-grade ingredients we include in Tuggs is highly digestible and helps your Cavapoo thrive in so many ways: providing the protein for growth (particularly muscle growth), a strong heart, and of course, nice and firm poops. With ingredients your Cavapoo can digest, their poop will be less volumous and less stinky. Makes picking them up slightly less tedious!

Improve dental hygiene for your Cavapoo

Dried pellets are definitely not the answer to clean teeth (or fresh breath). In fact, due to its ultra-processed nature, kibble is more prone to getting stuck in your pup’s teeth, contributing to decay and plaque build-up. Unsurprisingly, a fresh-food diet contributes far less to this. Moreover, the fresh ingredients contribute to a stronger overall immune system, ready to fight off any bacterial infections in the mouth or beyond.

Maintain healthy joints for your Cavapoo

Cavapoos can be prone to issues with their joints. Fortunately, a lean body condition will lessen the chances of issues manifesting - easily achievable on a Tuggs diet. Our salmon oil in each recipe has loads of Omega-3 fatty acids, the first port of call for any doggy looking to improve arthritis and reduce inflammation. Even if kibble did contain some of these healthy fats, the ultra-processed nature of the food makes it harder for your Cavapoo to absorb the goodness. Furthermore, the fats can go off given kibble has such a long shelf life. Fresh food is, well, fresh. The ingredients land on your doorstep with all their goodness ready to nourish your beloved.

Maintain a healthy weight for your Cavapoo

Our algorithm will sort a tailor-made diet for your Cavapoo, with clear portioning, and can be adapted as your pooch grows from a puppy into a lean adult. An overweight Cavapoo will be at a far increased risk of various conditions including arthritis, diabetes, and even cancer. Fresh food with no dodgy ingredients is a pretty easy way to stay on top of the weight issue!
