The Ultimutt Border Collie Handbook

Top herding dogs, praised for their impressive working abilities, Border Collies require lots of physical stimulation and love to be involved in family activities.

Introduction and History

Border Collies are widely regarded as one of the cleverest dog breeds in the world, thanks to their impressive hearing abilities, physical strength, and speed. They were originally developed by farmers in the region between England and Scotland, where they were favoured for their exceptional learning speed and high intelligence. Border Collies earned their reputation as the top herding dogs, praised for their impressive working abilities. Over time, they've also become beloved family dogs, known for their loyalty and affection. To stay happy and healthy, Border Collies require lots of physical and mental stimulation.

Quirks of a Border Collie

Border Collies are full of energy and excitement, particularly when given a task. Their strong drive to herd is clear, whether they're working on a farm or simply chasing objects around the house. Their sharp sight and quick reflexes make them natural at herding, even without livestock. Border Collies thrive when engaged in activities like agility, frisbee, and other dog sports, and they excel in tasks that challenge their mind and body. When not mentally stimulated, Border Collies may develop repetitive behaviours. Though they tend not to be reserved with strangers, Border Collies are incredibly devoted to their families and love to be involved in family activities.

Health Conditions Border Collie can be prone to

While generally healthy, Border Collies can be prone to certain health issues, such as:
  • Health Dysplasia: A developmental issue affecting the hip joint, which can lead to arthritis. Proper exercise and weight management can help reduce the risk.
  • Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA): A genetic condition that affects the eyes, potentially leading to vision loss. Regular eye check-ups are essential for early detection.
  • Epilepsy: Border Collies have a higher risk of epilepsy, which can be managed with medication.
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): This condition gradually deteriorates the retina, leading to blindness. Routine vet visits can help monitor vision changes.

Border Collie exercise

Border Collies are highly energetic dogs and require more than just daily walks. They need at least 1-2 hours of exercise each day, including activities like running, hiking, or engaging in mentally stimulating games. These dogs thrive on having a job to do, and interactive dog sports, obedience training, and games like frisbee and flyball help them stay mentally sharp and physically fit. Without adequate exercise, Border Collies may become bored and develop destructive behaviours.

Border Collie grooming

Border Collies have two types of coats: rough and smooth. Both coats shed regularly, but the rough variety requires more frequent grooming. Regular brushing is essential to maintain their fur and manage shedding. During shedding seasons, they need more frequent brushing to prevent matting and loose hair buildup. Bathing should only be done when necessary to preserve the natural oils in their coat. In addition to coat care, regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, and dental hygiene are important. Border Collies’ floppy ears are prone to infections, so keeping them clean is crucial.

Border Collie diet

Due to their high energy levels, Border Collies need a protein-rich, high-quality diet. A balanced diet consisting of lean meat, vegetables, and healthy fats supports their active lifestyle. Their calorie needs are higher than more relaxed breeds, so it’s important to feed them appropriately based on their age, weight, and activity level. Puppies should be fed food designed for growth, while adults require food that meets their daily energy needs. Older Border Collies may benefit from lower-calorie food and joint supplements to help prevent arthritis. Fresh water should always be available, and treat portions should be controlled to prevent weight gain.

Why we recommend fresh for a Border Collie

Highly processed kibble can really exacerbate the conditions Border Collies are more susceptible to. A dog fed on a fresh food diet will live on average 32 months longer than a dog fed a dry diet (read more about this on our blog). That’s why a fresh Tuggs diet, gently cooked to lock in the nutrition, pre-portioned and tailor-made is a no-brainer for your pooch.

Promote better digestion for your Border Collie

Border Collies are pretty good at digesting a whole load of things (more so than us humans!) but that’s not to say they can digest anything. The human-grade ingredients we include in Tuggs is highly digestible and helps your Border Collie thrive in so many ways: providing the protein for growth (particularly muscle growth), a strong heart, and of course, nice and firm poops. With ingredients your Border Collie can digest, their poop will be less volumous and less stinky. Makes picking them up slightly less tedious!

Improve dental hygiene for your Border Collie

Dried pellets are definitely not the answer to clean teeth (or fresh breath). In fact, due to its ultra-processed nature, kibble is more prone to getting stuck in your pup’s teeth, contributing to decay and plaque build-up. Unsurprisingly, a fresh-food diet contributes far less to this. Moreover, the fresh ingredients contribute to a stronger overall immune system, ready to fight off any bacterial infections in the mouth or beyond.

Maintain healthy joints for your Border Collie

Border Collies can be prone to issues with their joints. Fortunately, a lean body condition will lessen the chances of issues manifesting - easily achievable on a Tuggs diet. Our salmon oil in each recipe has loads of Omega-3 fatty acids, the first port of call for any doggy looking to improve arthritis and reduce inflammation. Even if kibble did contain some of these healthy fats, the ultra-processed nature of the food makes it harder for your Border Collie to absorb the goodness. Furthermore, the fats can go off given kibble has such a long shelf life. Fresh food is, well, fresh. The ingredients land on your doorstep with all their goodness ready to nourish your beloved.

Maintain a healthy weight for your Border Collie

Our algorithm will sort a tailor-made diet for your Border Collie, with clear portioning, and can be adapted as your pooch grows from a puppy into a lean adult. An overweight Border Collie will be at a far increased risk of various conditions including arthritis, diabetes, and even cancer. Fresh food with no dodgy ingredients is a pretty easy way to stay on top of the weight issue!
